Sauron Overview
Sauron provides logging, metrics, dashboards, alerting, and operational workflows for Oracle service teams. A Sauron instance gives your team managed endpoints for common observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Thanos, Alertmanager, OpenSearch, OpenSearch Dashboards, and the Sauron API.
A Sauron instance provides the endpoints described below. Sauron typically creates and maintains two instances (dev and prod) for each service team in their preferred OCI regions. A Sauron instance is composed of multiple pods within a Kubernetes cluster. Sauron is available across supported public OCI regions and is made available in newer OCI regions over time.
Start Here
If you are new to Sauron, start with the task that matches what you are trying to do. For most setup, configuration, and troubleshooting questions, the task pages below are the fastest path to an answer.
- Get access to Sauron endpoints: User Access and OIM Entitlements.
- Find or use Sauron endpoints: Sauron Endpoints.
- Send metrics to Sauron: Sending Metrics.
- Create a Grafana dashboard: Create Grafana Dashboards.
- Send logs to OpenSearch: Sending Logs.
- Define alerts: Defining Alerts.
- Scrape metrics from restricted networks: Shuttleproxy.
- Restore older OpenSearch indices: Restore OpenSearch Indices.
- Troubleshoot common symptoms: Troubleshoot and FAQs.
What are you trying to do?
| Task | Start here | Can I do it myself? |
|---|---|---|
| Access Sauron UI endpoints or choose an auth method | User Access | Usually yes after the correct OIM entitlement or credential exists. |
| Request or check OIM entitlements | OIM Entitlements | You can request access in OIM; new entitlement creation requires Sauron-team action. |
| Find component URLs | Sauron Endpoints | Yes. Use the welcome email or this Help page as the source of truth. |
| Send metrics or debug missing metrics | Sending Metrics | Yes for scrape config, PushProx client setup, and first metric checks. |
| Send logs or debug missing logs | Sending Logs | Yes for client setup and first log ingestion checks. |
| Create Grafana dashboards | Create Grafana Dashboards | Yes if your Sauron access allows the dashboard action. |
| Define alert rules, routes, or receivers | Defining Alerts | Yes for rule and route changes; some integrations need Sauron-team enablement. |
| Scrape from restricted networks | Shuttleproxy and Sending Metrics | Yes for client setup and validation after the needed proxy path is enabled. |
| Restore older OpenSearch indices | Restore OpenSearch Indices | Small restores can be self-service; large restores require Sauron-team help. |
| Request retention changes | FAQs | Requires Sauron-team action. |
| API updates fail because Observability is locked | FAQs | Requires Sauron-team review if the lock blocks urgent work. |
| Request plugin enablement | FAQs | Requires approval and Sauron-team review. |
| Request decommission or re-enable a disabled Sauron | FAQs and Troubleshoot | Requires Sauron-team action. |
Sauron Endpoints
Sauron provides a service team with endpoints for the following technologies. Use the welcome email or your Help page as the source of truth for the exact hostname of a newly provisioned Sauron.
| Component | What it is for | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Grafana | Create dashboards and visualize metrics. | Create Grafana Dashboards |
| Prometheus | Scrape metrics, query metrics, and evaluate Prometheus alert rules. | Sending Metrics |
| Thanos | Query Sauron metrics through the Thanos endpoint. | Sending Metrics |
| Alertmanager | Route Prometheus alert notifications to configured receivers. | Defining Alerts |
| OpenSearch | Receive, store, and search log documents. | Sending Logs |
| OpenSearch Dashboards or Kibana | Search and inspect OpenSearch logs in a browser. | Sending Logs |
| API Server | Inspect and update supported Sauron configuration through REST APIs. | Sauron API Server |
| Console | Inspect Sauron status, endpoints, configs, backups, and chatbot context. | Sauron Console |
| PushProx | Register scrape targets when direct ingress from Sauron Prometheus is unavailable. | Sending Metrics |
| Shuttleproxy | Support restricted-network scrape workflows when Shuttleproxy is used for your Sauron. | Shuttleproxy |

Escalation
Use #sauron-support after you have followed the relevant help page and
troubleshooting checklist, or when you need a Sauron-team action such as
provisioning, restore, retention change, unlock, re-enable, plugin enablement,
or other privileged operation.
When escalating, include the Sauron URL, component, exact symptom, completed checks, recent changes, and production impact. If the Slack channel is not available to you, email sauron_dev_ww_grp@oracle.com.
